Kyndryl Teams Up with University of Warsaw to Help Mitigate the Impacts of Climate Change

WARSAW, Poland, October 4, 2022 - Kyndryl Poland has signed a partnership agreement with the University of Warsaw (UW). As part of the cooperation, Kyndryl will partner with the university's Green Thinking Matter initiative, the H2Othon hackathon, which will take place October 4-5 in Warsaw.

With a focus on climate change action - and drought occurrence, in particular - the H2Othon tasks participants with developing progressive, actionable strategies for tackling pressing climate challenges. The plans are designed to take into account behavioral models of various social groups, as well as necessary skill sets for the execution of climate initiatives in a rapidly changing reality. They will be supported by mentors in their work using agile action methodologies, including Product Design Sprint. The results of their activities will be presented in the form of movie scripts, which will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Winners will receive a prize of 5,000 euros for the realization of their film.

In partnership with the UW, Kyndryl Poland experts will share their knowledge and experience in project management, teamwork, design thinking and agile methodologies with hackathon participants, and will join the jury to analyze the final projects. They will also take part in activities surrounding the event, including a series of debates discussing drought in local, regional and global contexts.

"For any university, cooperation with business representatives broadens horizons and opens perspectives for putting the knowledge gained by students into practice. We are pleased to welcome Kyndryl among our partners and hope that the upcoming hackathon is only the first of a series of activities we will implement together," says Prof. Agata Dziewulska, Plenipotentiary of the Rector of the University of Warsaw for the Green Thinking Matter.

Sustainability is a strategic priority for Kyndryl. The company works on the basis of sustainability principles in its daily operations, including reducing the carbon footprint it produces and supporting its customers in their journey to carbon neutrality (net zero emissions). In 2021, the organization reduced energy consumption by 33,400 MWh while saving $3.75 million by upgrading IT equipment, using energy-efficient technologies, and increasing virtualization of IT resources. We have also enabled the annual generation of 18,000 MWh of solar capacity and will continue to increase the renewable energy component across our portfolio.

"We are happy to partner with the University of Warsaw and be part of an initiative focused on finding innovative solutions to combat climate change. At Kyndryl, we are actively involved in campaigns to protect the environment and its resources. An example of this is the project to plant more than 90,000 trees around the world carried out with the One Tree Planted foundation or our employees in Poland, who support the company in its sustainable development activities as part of the Eco Stream volunteer initiative," concludes Anna Nowosielska, sponsor of the partnership and University Relations and Applications, Data and AI Delivery Lead, Kyndryl.
